All-State Chorus Rules/Regulations
Attendance Policy
As stated in the All-State Acceptance and Participation section of the GMEA Handbook
Students are required to attend all rehearsals and the performance. Students who are tardy will be moved to
the back of the section or dismissed from the event by the Division Chair.
Code of Conduct
A singer who, for any reason, violates the Rules of Behavior or Code of Conduct, creates a disruptive
situation for the chorus and the conductor. Therefore, the organizing chairperson is instructed to place any
student on automatic probation for a first offense. A second offense involving a disregard for the rules means that
the student will be brought before the GMEA Choral Division Chair and/or the GMEA Vice-President for All-State
to determine if the student will be removed from an All-State Chorus for violating any of the rules listed below.
1. A singer must be on time for all rehearsals and the performance. A student may not be tardy for any
reason. If directors and chaperones are providing transportation, they must take the responsibility for
getting the students where they need to be on time.
2. All singers must comply with the dress code.
3. For great music to happen, the singer must:
a. get rid of gum before rehearsals
b. be seated prior to the starting time of rehearsals
c. use proper posture during rehearsals
d. listen and refrain from extraneous conversations during rehearsals
e. have a pencil in hand during rehearsals
f. be attentive to the details of the music during rehearsals
g. not use cell phones/electronic devices during rehearsals
h. be respectful to the guest conductor, choir organizer, and choir members at all times
4. All singers must be aware that the GMEA night curfew will be enforced.
5. All singers will be responsible for their own:
a. music
b. pencil
c. proper concert attire
d. BLACK folder for the performance
6. CREED OF THE ALL-STATE SINGER:
MY PRIMARY GOAL FOR BEING AT ALL-STATE CHORUS IS TO GIVE MYSELF AND OTHERS AROUND ME THE
OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THE BEST MUSIC POSSIBLE. ALL OTHER REASONS ARE SECONDARY TO MY PRIMARY
GOAL.
Dress Code
As stated in the Acceptance and Participation section of the GMEA Handbook
Ladies will wear a floor-length black dress with sleeves or jacket, OR floor-length black skirt and black blouse
with sleeves or jacket, OR floor-length black pants and black blouse with sleeves or jacket. Blouses will hang
below the waist of a skirt or pants by 3 inches. Also, all ladies are to wear black shoes that completely
encompass the foot. Flip flops or sandals of any kind present a safety issue when maneuvering steps or risers,
and are not acceptable attire.

Important Info:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdT7I8PV-eMWUf5JGgvD1wYVOF9e_6l3HJdUFmvD1dDFO4HaA/viewformCongratulations on your student passing the first All-State audition! Thank you to the many families who’ve already sent in the $41 acceptance fee.
Please read this info for important information regarding help for the 2nd All-State audition:
The next step for students is to prepare their music for the 2nd audition, which will occur Thursday, Jan. 19 after school at North Hall Middle School.
Each student needs to prepare all 6 pieces and they will be tested on them at the 2nd audition. Students must score a 70 or higher to pass the 2nd audition.
IMPORTANT: We will NOT be able to hold regular afterschool practices for the second audition, as it is not practical. At the high school level, there are 4 All-State choirs as opposed to the 2 at the middle school level, and there are more vocal parts, making it virtually impossible for me to teach the music to each student. At this advanced level, the expectation is that students learn the music thoroughly on their own. I am happy to try to help with difficult sections, but it will be hard for me to have the time to work with all 20 students for long periods of time. That being said, there is a wonderful opportunity that I would like to bring to your attention:

2nd Audition Workshop (Sat. Jan 7 | 9:00am- 4:00pm)
On Saturday, January 7 from 9:00am – 4:00pm, a workshop is being offered for all students who would like help with their 2nd audition music.
The workshop will be at Decatur High School, (located at 310
North McDonough Street, Decatur, GA 30030) and will be led by 8 excellent area choral directors.
If you register and pay online by December 20, the cost is only $40. Onsite registration January 7 is also available.
The organizers of the event are so convinced of the effectiveness of the workshop, that if your student does not pass the second audition, they will give you a full refund of the registration fee.
You may register for the event here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdT7I8PV-eMWUf5JGgvD1wYVOF9e_6l3HJdUFmvD1dDFO4HaA/viewform
You may pay for the event here (you'll need to manually enter that the payment is to decaturperforms@gmail.com ($40):
https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=8UJ7R4AUMU246
This event will be particularly helpful for students who have never participated in All-State before.
If students opt not to participate, they will need to have their music completed learned by Tuesday, January 3rd. At that point, the second audition will be about 2 weeks away. If the music is not ready at that point, I highly recommend that students attend the January 8th workshop. Each year I have a small handful of students that have underestimated the amount of time required to thoroughly prepare for the 2nd audition, and this year with our family schedule, I won’t be able to commit to lots of afterschool help.
Please note: I will not be able to attend the workshop, as my family has a previous commitment.
Please see the flyer below and let me know if you have any questions about this workshop.

SECOND AUDITION:
The second all state chorus audition will be on the music for the choir to which the student has been assigned. The student will be scored on correct pitches and rhythms only, and NOT on language. The student may choose to sing the language of the piece or sing on a neutral syllable. The student will sing an excerpt from each piece on the program. Students are not allowed to bring their music into the audition room. Music marked with the excerpts will be provided for the audition. A student must attain a passing score of 70 on the second audition to attend the All State Chorus event. Students scoring 100 will receive a gold seal on their certificate. The scoring formula is based on the number of measures included in the audition and the number of correct measures the student sings. The student can miss all pitches and all rhythms in one measure and that will be counted as one measure missed or one mistake. The number of measures can vary between 75 and 120 per choir. Recorded music for the second audition excerpts will be taken from the rehearsal CDs made by SoundAround Audio Recordings. For this reason it is recommended that the teacher purchase the CDs for rehearsal prior to the audition. .
